look at all my goods!

from bottom left to top: orange ginger marmalade, fennel slaw, estonian cinnamon kringel pull apart bread, flat 12 porter beer jelly, salted caramel sauce, dark chocolate peanut butter cups, rosemary & sea salt shortbread cookies, homemade basil egg noodle pasta, homemade organic basil and sage compound butters, and strawberry patch jam.  i'd say the indy food swap was a success, wouldn't you?  it was the perfect way to spend my birthday.

i took 12 half-pint jars of peach butter (look for the recipe on friday) and traded for all of this!  wondering how a food swap works?  so was i.

imagine a square room with paper-covered tables set up around the perimeter.  imagine 30 smiling faces.  imagine 30 (or more) different items, each set up on a table.  each item has beside it a white piece of paper [bid sheet] listing the item's name, ingredients, with what it is best served, and by whom it was prepared.  there is further space for bids, but we'll get to that in a minute.

as for the specifics, the first 30 minutes are spent signing in, setting up, and greeting.  the second 30 minutes are spent viewing and sampling what others have brought to swap.  during this time when a swapper finds an item for which he/she would like to trade, the swapper bids by writing his/her name and swapper number on the item's bid sheet, stating what he/she has brought to trade.  after viewing and sampling have taken place, an announcement is made and swappers return to the table showcasing their item to look at its bid sheet, finally discovering who is interested in trading for their item and what is being offered in its place.  after allowing a few minutes, the final 30 minutes begins: pure, beautiful, unadulterated... chaos!   each swapper wanders around the room trying to find those who wanted to trade with them (name tags with swapper numbers are invaluable here), and those with whom they would like to trade.  each swapper trades until he/she is out of items and  although it is not possible to take home everything loved item (there are just too many treasures), each swapper goes home happy -- guaranteed.
